Ausgangspunkt:
Ein geerbtes Haus, Familienzuwachs und die Adaption des Gebäudes an heutige Bedürfnisse bilden die Grundlage für den Zu- und Umbau eines bestehenden Gebäudes in Klagenfurt.
Das Gebäude ist ein typisches Kleinhaus der Vor- und Nachkriegszeit, wie es als Prototyp unzählige male vorliegt. Eine Kindheitserinnerung an Kaffee und Kuchen bei Oma und Opa, das Bild des Hauses schlechthin. Ein in sich geschlossener, wohlproportionierter und oftmals unterschätzter Baukörper, formal sehr kompakt und ausgewogen. Im Gestus reduziert, unmodisch und einfach.
Die Qualität der städtischen Lage ist aufgrund der Stadtentwicklung seit dem zweiten Weltkrieg aus heutiger Sicht sehr hochstehend, da das Gebiet zur Entstehungszeit am preislich günstigeren Stadtrand lag. Heute, nach der Ausweitung der Stadt kann es fast schon wieder als zentrumsnah bezeichnet werden. In Ausführung und Größe nach damaligen Mittelstandards auf das nötigste reduziert, genügt es den heutigen Ansprüchen einer Kleinfamilie nicht mehr.
Entwurf:
Jede unbedachte Volumsvergrößerung greift sofort essentiell in den ursprünglichen formalen Gestus des Gebäudes ein. Daher wurde um den Charakter und Ausdruck des Hauses zu bewahren auf Dialog gesetzt.
Der Zubau reagiert auf Gegebenheiten des bestehenden Gebäudes und auf den gartenseitigen Anbau aus den 60-er Jahren.
Leichtfüßig wird eine Spange im Obergeschoss auf den Anbau gesetzt, diese bildet so ein selbstbewusstes neues Gebilde in Form und Materialität.
Das nach Süden orientierte Volumen des Zubaus wird erst vom Gartenraum aus zur Gänze spürbar. Die Beziehung zum öffentlichen Raum, mit den Teileinblicken auf das neue Gebäude von der Straße aus, kann als spannend und selbstbewusst zurückhaltend bezeichnet werden.
In Verbindung mit dem neuen seitlichen Garagentrakt entsteht ein zueinander spannungsgeladenes neues Gefüge, welches mit dem Bestand eine Komposition von gleichwertigen Bauteilen aus verschiedenen Zeiten bildet.

An inherited house, addition to the family and the adaptation of the building for nowadays needs are forming the base for the development and the conversion of an existing building in Klagenfurt.
The building is a typical small house of the pre- and post-war period which exists as a prototype countless times. A childhood memory of coffee circles with grandma and grandpa, the picture of a house quite simply. A well-rounded, proportioned and many times underestimated construction, very compact in its form and balanced.
Reduced in its air, non-fashionable and simple. The quality of the urban site is high standing on the basis of the urban development since World War II; during the times of construction the site - available at unusually low prices then - was located at the outskirts of the city. Today – after the city’s expansion – the site can be described as situated near the centre. The house was reduced to the minimum in its implementation and size referring to middle standards at this time; today it is not adequate for a nuclear familiy’s demands.
Draft:
Every thoughtless extension of the volume intervenes essentially in the original formal air of the building. Hence, the architects relied on dialog to preserve the character and the expression of the house.
The development reacts to the conditions of the existing building and to the extension at the garden side built in the 1960s.
Nimbly there is put a clasp in the upper storey onto the extension, it is a self-confident new structure in its form and materiality.
The volume of the development, orientated to the south, is only perceptible from the garden-space. The relation to the public space – with partial views on the new building from the street – can be described exciting and self-confidently reserved.
In connection with the new garage section at the side there is created a new structure charged with tension, which forms with the existing a composition of equal construction parts from different times.
